Local Heroes Wanted | Business Spotlight Project Logo

40 years ago, my grandfather left the job of a lifetime working for General Electric. He packed up the family and moved everyone to Texas in search of something better.

The move did more than raise a few eyebrows. My grandmother thought he might be crazy, and nobody, including my Dad, who was ten at the time, was happy about it.

The move to Texas wasn’t an option; it was an order. Grandpa was a Marine who survived a trip to the Korean War and had no trouble telling people what to do and getting things done.

He wasted no time. With a beat-up truck, a bunch of tools, and the family’s life savings, he started Action Air, and we’re all better off because of it.

Three generations later, we’re busier than ever and growing every year.

The most surprising thing about this business isn’t the fancy trucks, complicated equipment, or the technology. It’s the fact that the same philosophy that got us started hasn’t changed one bit.

Grandpa wasn’t the type to make signs, but if he did make one, here’s what it would say:

How to Run a Business

Keep your word

Be fair

Show up when you say you will

Don’t lie

Get in the truck, no matter what time it is

Do great work

Treat everyone like family

By the time my Dad took over, he’d probably heard those rules thousands of times. And over the years, I heard them plenty, but I also got a chance to see them in action.

Instead of selling lemonade or delivering newspapers, Dad gave me my first job when I was still in grade school. I felt like a superhero because I could get into small spaces and do things nobody else could.

Ductwork that stumped guys on the crew became my speciality, and by the time I was done with school, I had earned my place on the team.

Dad lived by those rules Grandpa set, and I watched him practice them for over 20 years. He never got annoyed with customers, no matter how many questions they asked, and he always rolled out of bed when the phone rang, no matter what time it was.

He retired a few years ago, but his commitment to hard work and treating customers like family isn’t going anywhere. The work he and my Grandpa put in is something I’ll never forget.

When you search online for someone to help with your air and heating, there are bigger companies that have fancy ads, ridiculous coupons, and plenty of promises.

What that search won’t tell you is who’s the real deal and who’s just looking to make a buck. Consider this an invitation to hold us to our word. When we say we’re nothing like other companies, we mean it.

See why our customers tell their friends and neighbors about us.

See the difference 3 generations of treating people like family makes.

See the difference between Action Air and everyone else.

Sincerely,

The more we follow that playbook, the more the phone rings. When I look at my list of customers, I can trace almost everyone back to a recommendation from another customer.

Give a local business the gift of the spotlight. Let us know what sets them apart, and we just might feature them in our next edition.

    questions
    & answers

How do you make your final selections?

We interview each business owner. We take into account how long they’ve been in business, how much experience they have, what sets them apart, and what customers are saying.

Can we nominate a business again if they don’t get selected the first time?

Yes. We keep track of all nominations, but we get so many that there just isn’t a way to feature everyone. If a business gets multiple nominations, we’ll certainly take notice and give them proper consideration.

We were featured. How can we get a hard copy?

Just ask. We can send you a beautiful framed copy of your feature that you’d be proud to hang on any wall. Fill out the form above or send an email to

What if a business is really small?

Size doesn’t matter here. Quality is what we’re after. We’re looking for exceptional businesses that go above and beyond serving their community, regardless of their size.

    Can we nominate a startup?

Yes, but it will be tough to get featured. Our judges prefer to see some experience and a proven track record before being recognized
